Continuing with the resources for Crime. This is part of a series on Crime and Justice for my S2 pupils. However, this is also highly adaptable for the Senior Phase! If you are working with National 4/5 RMPS classes on unit outcomes regarding the strengths and weaknesses of moral issues, this is a fantastic task to introduce critical conversations around why we punish offenders.
What is Included?
This activity centres on evaluating the four core aims of punishment: Protection, Retribution, Rehabilitation, and Deterrence.
- 8 Unique Case Studies: The pack includes two scenarios for each aim, deliberately highlighting one strength and one weakness.
- Extension Tasks: Built-in discussion questions are provided to stretch critical thinking and prompt classroom debate.
- Teacher Answer Key: A full set of answers is included to save you time.
How the Task Works
The activity is designed to be straightforward and engaging for pupils. For each case study, they will need to:
- Read the scenario carefully.
- Identify which of the four aims of punishment it best fits into.
- Evaluate whether the punishment described in the scenario is actually effective.
